Cleaners SW2 Health and Safety Policy

This Health and Safety Policy sets out the principles and procedures followed by Cleaners SW2 to protect our staff, clients, visitors and members of the public while we deliver cleaning services. Our aim is to maintain safe working conditions, prevent accidents and ill health, and promote a culture of safety and responsibility in every location where we operate.

Policy Statement

Cleaners SW2 is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment. We will take all reasonably practicable steps to identify, assess and control risks associated with our cleaning activities. We expect every member of our team to follow this policy and any related instructions, and we will support them with appropriate training, supervision and equipment.

Roles and Responsibilities

Management is responsible for implementing and reviewing this Health and Safety Policy, providing suitable resources, and ensuring that risk assessments and safe systems of work are in place for all cleaning tasks. Supervisors and team leaders must monitor day-to-day practices, report hazards, and ensure that staff follow safe working methods.

All cleaners are responsible for taking reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. This includes using equipment correctly, wearing any personal protective equipment that has been issued, reporting hazards or incidents promptly, and cooperating with any health and safety instructions or training.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Before carrying out cleaning services, we conduct risk assessments to identify potential hazards, evaluate the level of risk, and determine appropriate control measures. Areas considered include slips, trips and falls, manual handling, working at height where applicable, exposure to chemicals, electrical safety and any special risks related to the specific premises.

Where risks are identified, we implement safe systems of work. These may include restricted access to certain areas while cleaning is underway, the use of warning signs, safe use of ladders or step stools for higher areas, and clear procedures for handling and disposing of waste. Risk assessments are reviewed periodically and whenever there is a significant change in the working environment or methods.

Training and Supervision

All staff receive health and safety induction training relevant to cleaning work. This includes instruction on safe use of cleaning equipment and chemicals, correct manual handling techniques, emergency procedures and how to report accidents, near misses and hazards. Additional task-specific training is provided as needed, for example for the use of specialised machinery or equipment.

Supervisors monitor staff performance, provide guidance, and take corrective action if unsafe practices are observed. Training records are maintained and periodically reviewed to ensure staff remain competent and up to date with current procedures.

Chemical Safety and Control of Substances

Cleaning products and other substances are selected with safety in mind and used strictly according to manufacturer instructions. Products are kept in their original containers with labels intact. Where appropriate, information on hazards and safe handling is provided to staff. Dilution instructions are followed precisely, and mixing of chemicals is strictly prohibited unless specified as safe by the manufacturer.

When handling cleaning chemicals, staff are required to wear suitable personal protective equipment, such as gloves and eye protection where necessary. Chemicals are stored securely and away from food, children, pets and members of the public. Spills are dealt with promptly using appropriate methods, and contaminated materials are disposed of safely.

Personal Protective Equipment

Cleaners SW2 provides personal protective equipment appropriate to the tasks being undertaken. This may include gloves, protective clothing, eye protection, masks or other items as identified by risk assessments. Staff must use the equipment as instructed, report any damage or defects, and ensure it is stored correctly when not in use. Replacement equipment is provided when needed.

Manual Handling and Use of Equipment

To reduce the risk of injury from lifting, carrying or moving objects, staff are trained in safe manual handling techniques and encouraged to use mechanical aids and trolleys where available. Heavy or awkward items are not to be moved without assistance or appropriate equipment.

Cleaning machinery and electrical equipment are maintained in safe working order. Before use, staff must visually inspect cables, plugs and casings for damage. Faulty equipment must be taken out of service and reported immediately. Electrical equipment is not used with wet hands or in standing water, and sockets are not overloaded.

Slips, Trips and Falls

To minimise the risk of slips and trips, floors are cleaned using methods suitable for the surface and conditions. Wet floor signs and other warning notices are used where necessary until areas are dry and safe to walk on. Cables and equipment are routed and stored to prevent trip hazards, and spillages are cleaned up promptly and safely.

Protection of Clients, Visitors and the Public

While carrying out cleaning services, we take care to safeguard anyone who may be present at or near the premises. Where practicable, work is scheduled to reduce disruption and risk to building users. Access to areas where cleaning is in progress may be restricted, and clear signage is used to warn of any hazards such as wet floors or maintenance activities.

Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported as soon as possible to a supervisor or manager. Details are recorded and investigated to identify causes and implement corrective actions. Staff are informed of emergency procedures at each site, including evacuation routes, fire safety arrangements and the location of first aid resources where applicable.

Health, Welfare and Wellbeing

Cleaners SW2 recognises the importance of health and wellbeing in the workplace. We aim to reduce work-related stress and fatigue by assigning tasks fairly, providing adequate breaks where appropriate, and ensuring workloads are manageable. Staff are encouraged to report any health issues that may affect their work so that adjustments or support can be considered.

Policy Review and Continuous Improvement

This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains effective and up to date with current legislation, best practice and the nature of our services. Feedback from staff and clients is welcomed and used to improve our safety standards. Revisions to the policy are communicated to all relevant personnel, and additional training is provided where necessary.

By following this policy, Cleaners SW2 aims to deliver high quality cleaning services while maintaining a safe environment for everyone involved.
